  • Each state has a different day of celebrating which coincides with the areas planting times
  • Hawaii celebrates in November and Alaska in May
  • Julius Sterling Morton created the holiday in April of 1872
  • Arbor Day became a legal holiday in April of 1885
  • Within 20 years of its origination, every state celebrated this holiday except for Delaware, which eventually joined in the celebration
  • Morton began the holiday after he and his bride moved to the west and settled on 160 acres of TREELESS land
  • We need trees........(bet you never heard that before)
  • Roadside trees reduce nearby indoor air pollution by more than 50%
  • Office workers with a view of trees report significantly less stress and more satisfaction
  • Trees lower surface and air temperatures
  • Trees release oxygen and take in carbon dioxide, humans take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide
  • Trees are a good investment for the public dollar.....the mature street trees in Beverly Hills are worth $450 million
  • Trees increase the public dollar by providing cleaner air, lower energy costs, improved water quality, storm water control and increased property value
  • On the first Arbor Day in 1872, 1 million trees were planted

Ornamental Cabbage

Ornamental cabbage, also known as ornamental kale, looks just like the name……….a pretty head of cabbage.  This plant gets its color from the leaves just like the poinsettia.  The ornament cabbage has a very unique trait, the beautiful rosette foliage in the center changes color when the weather goes below 50 degrees.
